Welcome back to the Galaxy Far Far FAR away. Dave Filoni, a man held in the highest esteem amongst Star Wars nerds, successfully recaptures the magic of Star Wars in this new serial installment. Rosario Dawson’s understated rendition of the titular character, with her eternally calm demeanor and unshakable self-belief, makes her an instant classic Jedi warrior. The cinematography is stunning in this series, a large majority of the space scenes look like they were ripped straight from an IMAX showing. Ahsoka surprisingly cost around $100 million to make and they squeezed every last drop out of that budget to craft a beautiful star wars mosaic. If you can make a show look like this for $100 Million, which is a rounding error for the House of Mouse, it does make you wonder how the hell the same company burned $225 MILLION on She-Hulk…where on gods green earth did the other $125 million go?!? You could have fed the homeless or given meals to underprivileged students with that chump change Mickey! Anyway, this show exceeded our expectations, which to be fair weren’t incredibly high given the somewhat recent misses of Obi Wan and the dreadful Book of Boba Fett, but Ahsoka stands firmly as our 2nd ranked Star Wars live action show behind The Mandalaorian. New creatures such as space and time traveling airborne whales and teenage mutant ninja cricket things made for a whimsical entry into the galaxy lore, it’s always a thrill seeing pockets of the Star Wars Universe we’ve never experienced before.
Our only criticism has to be the subpar performances of some of the co-mains, with Hera being particularly bad. No disrespect to the actress but that character was horrific and she got a ton of screen time. Some blame should definitely be laid at the feet of the writer, but this character was blander than a stale bag of unfrosted cheerios. Side note, what was up with the pair of pants on her head, it looked liked a butt-head, that thing was thicker than a bowl of green oatmeal. We thought Thrawn was perfectly spooky and a very game adversary for Ahsoka and friends, he has a commanding presence and seems to always be a step or two ahead of the heroes. We look forward to seeing more from the Grand-Admiral, and it seems like Lars Mikkelson will fit this role like a glove. If you want to truly get the most out of this series, we recommend checking out the animated series before you dive in, it would have been even more enjoyable had we developed an emotional connection with these characters going in. But thanks to Rosario Dawson’s performance, Ahsoka still feels like an old friend who the audience will be able to form an immediate emotional connection with. From force ghosts to flying aquatic mammals, new galaxies and alternate space/time dimensions, Ahsoka has a little bit of everything for every Star Wars fan. 8.4
